Tattoo Aftercare Suggestions

Tattoo Aftercare Guide

Congratulations on your new tattoo! Proper aftercare is crucial for both the healing process and the long-term appearance of your tattoo. Please follow the instructions below carefully to ensure the best results for your new ink.

For Traditional Bandage Care

Leave the Bandage On
Your artist has applied a sterile bandage to protect your tattoo. Leave it on for the recommended time (at least 45 minutes) to allow your skin to begin the healing process and prevent infection.

Wash Your Hands
Always wash your hands with mild, fragrance-free antibacterial soap before touching your tattoo.

Gently Clean the Area
After removing the bandage, gently clean your tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free antibacterial soap. Avoid using washcloths, sponges, or loofahs. Do not scrub. Lightly pat the area dry with a clean towel.

Let It Breathe
Allow the area to air dry for 20 to 30 minutes before applying any aftercare product.

Apply Aftercare Lotion
Use a thin layer of unscented, dye-free lotion. Do not over-apply. Massage it in gently with clean hands to keep the tattoo moisturized.

Avoid Picking or Scratching
Do not pick, scratch, or peel at your healing tattoo. This can cause scarring and loss of ink.

Keep It Clean & Dry
Avoid soaking the tattoo. This means no swimming, baths, hot tubs, or saunas for at least 2 weeks. Showers are fine.

Protect from Sunlight
Avoid sun exposure during healing. Once healed, apply sunscreen to protect the tattoo from fading.

For Second Skin (Saniderm/Tegaderm)

Initial Application
Your artist applied a medical-grade, breathable film to cover your tattoo. Leave it on for at least 24 hours and up to 5 days, depending on your artist’s instructions. It is normal for plasma and ink to build up under the film.

Removing the Bandage
Remove slowly under warm water. Peel the film back slowly and carefully, not upward, to minimize irritation.

Clean the Tattoo
Gently wash with fragrance-free antibacterial soap and lukewarm water. Pat dry with a clean towel and allow the tattoo to air dry before applying any lotion.

Switch to Traditional Aftercare
Once the second skin is removed, continue your healing using the traditional lotion method above. Apply a thin layer of unscented lotion 2–3 times per day.

Additional Tips

  • Wear Loose, Breathable Clothing: Avoid clothing that may rub against or irritate your tattoo.

  • Follow Your Artist’s Advice: Your artist may provide extra tips depending on your placement and style of tattoo.

  • Watch for Infection: Mild redness and swelling are normal in the first few days. Seek medical advice if you notice excessive redness, pus, fever, or prolonged pain.

  • Be Patient: Healing typically takes 2–4 weeks. Take care and avoid shortcuts!
